Four months ago, federal agents at JFK International Airport reported finding something peculiar and potentially dangerous buried beneath smoked fish in a shipment from Africa for a West Brighton woman: There were 65 pieces of illegal smoked bushmeat, including monkey skulls and limbs, and even a hoof and leg belonging to a small antelope. Federal prosecutors said Liberian native Mamie Manneh, 38, who also is known as Mamie Jefferson, shipped the bushmeat here -- apparently to sell -- and have charged her with fraudulently importing unauthorized goods into the country.
